- Alcohols with H atom on carbon next to OH group can be dehydrated to alkenes
- 180 degrees
- sulphuric or conc. phosphoric catalyst.
- Mechanism = Elimination
- Reaction occurs in three steps:
1) Protonation (H+ added to OH group)
2) Loss of water (produces an carbocation)
3) Loss of a proton (produces alkene)
